150th Home Groundbreaking

On Thursday, October 26, Habitat for Humanity of Chester County officially broke ground on their 150th affordable home.

Habitat supporters, sponsors, and community members gathered at the site of the future home on 400 Community Lane, Coatesville in the Cambria Terrace community to reflect on the last 149 homes and celebrate the future of the organization.  Commissioner Kathi Cozzone called the community, “an incredible return on investment” on the Community Development Block Grant that the county awarded to Habitat in 2011 in order to cover the cost of infrastructure work in the neighborhood. She then presented Habitat Executive Director, Chip Huston, with a citation recognizing the milestone achievement.

Also present at the groundbreaking and pictured above (from left to right) is Mike Boyd from State Senator Andy Dinniman’s office; Commissioner Cozzone; Habitat Board of Directors President, Charles Whitford; Amber Little, from State Representative Harry Lewis’s office and Habitat homeowner; as well as Pat Bokovitz, Director of the Chester County Department of Community Development.

At the conclusion of the groundbreaking ceremony, Wells Fargo presented Habitat with a $160,000 check to fund two additional houses in 2018.

Habitat Partners with Wellington at Hershey’s Mill

This June, staff members from Wellington at Hershey’s Mill and their partner, Caring Hospice, volunteered for two days at Habitat for Humanity as part of their first community Volunteer Initiative.

These volunteer days were part of a larger effort to encourage a giving heart and spirit of service in Wellington staff and residents. Though the weather was too hot to bring residents, they participated back at Wellington by assisting in fundraising events and making gifts for incoming Habitat homeowners. In just three months, they held dress down days, bake sales, raffles, and sold t-shirt sponsorships to raise over $1,300 for Habitat’s mission.

Habitat was chosen for this partnership as a result of the efforts of Wellington employee, Sabrina Codella, who has been a Habitat homeowner herself in New Jersey since 2008. Since spending nearly 400 hours of sweat equity building her home, Sabrina went back to school, became a RN, and is now the Director of Resident Care at Wellington Court.

Ms. Codella said the idea behind the initiative, aside from bringing staff and residents together, was to alleviate the stigma that entering into a senior facility means that a person can no longer contribute to society. She said the attitude that she wanted to impress upon residents was that, “No matter what stage of life you’re in, you can give back to the community.”

We look forward to partnering with Wellington in the future and were grateful to be a part of their first community Volunteer Initiative!

Driving to Build Golf Outing

Despite the sudden heat wave, it was a beautiful day for golf at the fourteenth annual Driving to Build golf outing on June 12 at French Creek Golf Club. Fun was had by all as foursomes competed in chipping, longest drive, straightest drive, and closest to the pin contests on a beautiful course. All money raised will support Habitat’s mission to build decent, affordable housing in Chester County. The success of the event would not have been possible without the support of the golfers and generous sponsors.

Build a House…Build a Dream 2017

Congratulations to all of the 2017 Contestants!

Volunteers Wanted!

The Caln and Kennett Square ReStores are looking for a friendly, positive person to lend a hand in the warehouse! The Volunteer Warehouse Assistant is a flexible, weekly volunteer position available any day Monday through Saturday in 3+ hour shifts. Volunteers should be comfortable moving furniture and other large and bulky items up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in safe and careful loading and unloading of ReStore donations and purchases from customers’ vehicles and ReStore trucks.
  • Help to maintain cleanliness and organization of the warehouse and sales floor. Keep aisles clear of product and debris
  • Graciously accept donations that have been dropped off at back dock and politely, but firmly, reject items that do not meet the ReStore donation guidelines.
  • Safely place new donations on the sales floor in the correct department.
