In addition to accepting donations at the stores, arrangements may also be made to pick up your donations at your home. To schedule a pick-up in Chester County, please call 610-466-1890. Donations pick-ups are scheduled Tuesday-Saturday from 9-2. Items must be on the ground floor level, with no stairs.

To help volunteers get a jump-start on their building skills, Lowe’s, the underwriter of Habitat’s Women Build program and sponsor of National Women Build Week, is hosting “how-to” clinics at its Downingtown store.

Women Build how-to clinics are open to women interested in volunteering at any local Women Build site. There is no cost to enroll and Lowe’s provides all supplies.  Each of the clinics led by Lowe’s store employees will teach home construction basics to volunteers and offer opportunities to practice new skills.  Women will also learn tool safety tips.

The free clinics will take place at Lowe’s, 1250 Cornerstone Boulevard in Downingtown on May 9 from 7 pm-9 pm

Clinic Topics Include:

How to Safely Use Hand and Power Tools

How to Install Exterior Siding

How to Finish Interior with Paint and Trim

To sign up for the clinics, volunteers should contact Eliza Bernardini, the Habitat for Humanity of Chester County volunteer coordinator, at Eliza@hfhcc.org or 610-384-7993, ext. 17.  Each clinic is limited to 25 participants. Registered volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and come ready to learn.  All supplies will be provided on-site.

Habitat for Humanity, Lowe’s seek women volunteers to build homes during

National Women Build Week

Thousands of women across the country join together May 5 – 13 to build homes with local families

Women volunteers will raise their hammers at Habitat for Humanity construction sites across the country in recognition of National Women Build Week, May 5-13.  The event is a nationwide initiative of Habitat’s Women Build program developed in partnership with Lowe’s.

Now in its fifth year, National Women Build Week challenges women to devote at least one day to creating simple, decent and affordable housing in their local communities.  Nearly 31,000 women volunteers from all 50 states have participated in the previous four events.

This year’s theme, “The Build Generation,” reflects the event’s goal to recruit and train women volunteers, as well as welcome the next generation of Habitat Women Builders – young women, ages 16-24 – to help support Habitat’s mission to create affordable housing.  Lowe’s and Habitat for Humanity of Chester County are looking for women to volunteer at our Coatesville build site on Saturday, May 5.  Construction or home improvement experience is not necessary.

National Women Build Week is held the week leading up to Mother’s Day because of its significance to Habitat homeowners and volunteers.  Families with children make up a staggering number of those in need of adequate housing. More than 12 million children – one in six – live in poverty housing in the United States alone.

Lowe’s contributed more than $1.3 million to National Women Build Week, providing $5,000 Lowe’s gift cards to 275 Habitat affiliates.  National Women Build Week is one of the major initiatives supported through Lowe’s five-year, $20 million pledge to Habitat.  As the underwriter of the Women Build program since 2004, Lowe’s conducts “how-to” clinics at stores to teach women construction skills, enabling them to support Habitat projects across the country.

Habitat for Humanity of Chester County officially opened its ReStore in Kennett Square on Saturday, May 5.  The ReStore is a retail store, open to the public, that sells donated appliances, furniture, clothing, cabinetry, etc.  All proceeds from the store will be used to build affordable housing in Southern Chester County.

Donations will be accepted on Saturdays in March from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Tuesday through Saturday beginning Tuesday, April 10 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Habitat for Humanity of Chester County will be holding an orientation class on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 6 p.m. at Life Transforming Ministries, located at 643-645 E. Lincoln Highway (next to the Fluff & Fold) in Coatesville.

Things to keep in mind before you attend this class:

• In order to apply for a Habitat for Humanity house, you have to attend an orientation class
• In order to qualify, you must earn between $29,000 and $62,000
• All applicants must work or live in Chester County
• We are currently looking for homeowners for 6 houses – all of which are located in Coatesville
• Construction will begin on these houses later this summer – with a move in date of Summer, 2013
