Becoming a Homeowner
Thank you for your interest in becoming a Habitat for Humanity of Chester County homeowner. HfHCC welcomes diversity and encourages all Chester County community members who meet the three basic criteria to apply for a Habitat home.
We are pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin.
All homeowner applications are reviewed by the Family Selection Committee, a group of community volunteers who work under the supervision of HfHCC’s Board of Directors and staff.
Families are selected based on the following three criteria:
Need:
The applicant’s current living situation and whether he/she has the means to qualify for a home by conventional means will be considered. Does a majority of the applicant’s income go toward housing? Is the applicant’s housing substandard or temporary?
Ability to Pay:
During the application and selection process each applicant’s income will be considered. The applicants need to have a steady source of income. They must be able to pay a monthly mortgage and their credit history needs to indicate this.
Willingness to Partner:
Each applicant is required to complete a minimum of 200 ‘sweat equity’ hours. The hours can be completed by volunteering at the construction site of their future home or one of their neighbors’ homes. Homeowner education classes and workshops are a mandatory part of the sweat equity requirement.
Interest Form
Applications are only available at Habitat homeowner orientation sessions. Please submit your information in the interest form so that we can be in touch to pre-qualify you to attend one of these sessions.
Thank you and we look forward to assisting you in future homeownership.
